Tuition & Affordability
Every year the Head of School, Director of Finance, and Board of Trustees work together to set the school’s tuition. Many factors go into this decision, and the overarching goal is to further the mission of the school. The Board is committed to creating a budget that allows MTS to retain and hire excellent faculty and staff, provide an unparalleled program for our students, and maintain the long-term financial strength of the school.
Tuition for the 2016–2017 academic year is $28,790. Additional fees per grade apply ranging from $335 to $1,135 (fees include insurance, field trips, parent council dues, textbooks, yearbook, performing arts, introduction to music and basketball, and auction class projects). Eighth grade fees are $2,075 and include graduation and a week at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival.
MTS dedicates over 15% of the operating budget to maintain financial accessibility and diversity in our school. We encourage families to apply for financial assistance if they feel affording the full tuition is out of reach.

Like many independent schools, MTS uses School & Student Services (SSS), a service of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), to evaluate a family’s ability to pay for their child’s education. The SSS Family Portal has many helpful resources, including frequently asked questions. Please follow the steps below to submit an application for financial assistance. STEPS TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
- Complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online. The PFS may be completed as early as October 24, 2016 and must be submitted by January 12, 2017. Use School Code 5251 when submitting your PFS. In separated/divorced cases, both parents must submit a PFS.
- Upload your 2015 tax returns, including W2’s or 1099’s, to SSS by January 12, 2017. Please include all schedules filed.
- When complete, upload your 2016 tax returns, including W2’s or 1099’s, to SSS on or before April 16, 2017. Please include all schedules filed.
Families applying for financial assistance will receive their admission decision and financial assistance decision at the same time. The admissions committee is a separate committee from the financial assistance committee. Financial assistance information is not shared with the admissions committee, and we observe a "blind" financial assistance process.
Financial assistance awards are granted for one year and families reapply for assistance each year. Unless there is a significant change in income or assets, families can expect the same level of assistance to continue from year to year, with a slight increase in line with an annual tuition increase.
