Tuition & Affordability

Every year the Head of School, Finance Office, and Board of Trustees work together to set the school’s tuition. Many factors go into this decision, and the overarching goal is to further the mission of the school. The Board is committed to creating a budget that allows MTS to retain and hire excellent faculty and staff, provide an unparalleled program for our students, and maintain the long-term financial strength of the school.

Tuition for the 2019–2020 academic year is $34,160 for kindergarten-5th grade and $35,100 for 6th–8th grade.

MTS dedicates over 15% of the operating budget to maintain financial accessibility in our school. We encourage families to apply for financial assistance if they feel affording the full tuition is out of reach.

Financial Assistance

We understand that investing in an independent school education requires consideration, planning, and prioritization. We are happy to answer your questions at any time and strive to make the financial assistance application process as smooth as possible.

Like many independent schools, MTS uses School & Student Services (SSS), a service of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), to evaluate a family’s ability to pay for their child’s education. The SSS Family Portal has many helpful resources, including frequently asked questions. Please follow the steps below to submit an application for financial assistance. Amy Pearson, Director of Admissions & Marketing, is happy to answer your questions at any time and can be reached by phone at 415-383-9434 x113 or by email at

  1. Complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online. The PFS may be completed as early as November 1, 2019 and must be submitted by January 10, 2020. Use School Code 5251 when submitting your PFS. In separated/divorced cases, both parents must submit a PFS.

  2. Upload your 2018 tax returns, including W2’s or 1099’s, to SSS by January 17, 2020. Please include all schedules filed.

  3. When complete, upload your 2019 tax returns, including W2’s or 1099’s, to SSS on or before April 16, 2020. Please include all schedules filed.

Families applying for financial assistance will receive their admission decision and financial assistance decision at the same time. The admissions committee is a separate committee from the financial assistance committee. Financial assistance information is not shared with the admissions committee, and we observe a blind financial assistance process.

Financial assistance awards are granted for one year and families reapply for assistance each year. Unless there is a significant change in income or assets, families can expect the same level of assistance to continue from year to year, with a slight increase in line with an annual tuition increase.
