Bay Area journalist and broadcaster, and Mill Valley native, Brian Murphy discusses the value of professional and youth sports in the social media age. How are recent changes in our culture reflected in media coverage of professional sports, as well as participation in youth sports? From minute-by-minute reporting on Twitter to the ever-increasing emphasis on completion and success over participation and enjoyment, Mr. Murphy will explore the ways in which sports are a reflection of changes in our culture.
ABOUT BRIAN MURPHY: Brian Murphy co-hosts KNBR's "Murph and Mac" morning show, Monday thru Friday, 6 am to 10 am on KNBR 680, the flagship of the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers. The Mill Valley native graduated from Tamalpais High in 1985 and from UCLA in 1989 with a degree in English literature. Murphy's 28-year career in sports media includes writing for the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, ESPN.com and Yahoo! sports, ranging from his beat days covering the 49ers to his NFL and PGA Tour columns for the national web sites. Murphy joined KNBR in 2004 and the 'Murph and Mac' show in 2017 was named among the top 10 best sports radio shows in America by Radio Ink Magazine. Murphy is the author of six books, including three on the Giants' 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series teams. He and his wife, Candace, live in Mill Valley with their two sons, two dogs and full slate of coaching activities on the suburban youth sports hamster wheel.
