22 Medals at the Margie Burke Speech Tournament!

We are very proud of our MTS students who performed in the Margie Burke Memorial Speech Tournament. This highly competitive and prestigious event has been held for 37 years at the Ross School in Ross. Middle School students, in both public and private North Bay schools, participate each Spring in categories such as Dramatic Interpretation, Impromptu, Original Prose and Poetry, and Persuasive Speaking. Sadly, for the last two years, due to Covid, the tournament had to be canceled, but this year the tournament was held on Saturday, April 30th, 2022.

Mount Tamalpais School has long been known to be a force at the tournament. This is in large part due to our performing arts teacher Deb Marcomm for her long-time leadership and expertise in guiding our students into becoming masterful public speakers. MTS was, in fact, honored this year for the longest time a school has participated in bringing a team of speakers and judges to compete besides the Ross School itself. Michael Sullivan and Trevor Marcom volunteered as judges from MTS along with many other volunteer judges representing different schools.

A huge congratulations to our MTS award winners this year! Our thirteen participants came home with 22 medals (8 gold, 6 silver, and 8 bronze), as well as 4 trophies! A first for us, the 4 trophies awarded at the end of the day were for 8th Grade Grand Champion, 8th Grade 2nd Place Grand Champion, 7th Grade Grand Champion, and 7th Grade 3rd Place Grand Champion.

Truly outstanding performances by our MTS participants, especially considering that the tournament has not happened in two years. We are looking forward to further growing the MTS team in the years to come under Deb's amazing tutelage. Students can sign up for the After the Bell enrichment classes, "Prep for Speech Tournament," offered by Deb over the course of the year in order to compete.
