Debunking Common Misconceptions about Native American & Indigenous People
Lower School Curriculum Highlight
In honor of Native American and Indigenous Peoples' Month, the fourth graders answered the question: "What can we do to elicit change for the way that America has treated its indigenous people?" Their answer: "Spread the word and bring forward Native voices." We started off by amplifying the voice of Joey Clift, who grew up on the Tulalip Reservation in Washington State, by dissecting and synthesizing his article " 8 of the Biggest Misconceptions About Native Americans." After working in small groups or pairs to breakdown each specific misconception, the fourth-graders decided the best way to spread the word was to share what they learned with their community by creating videos.
