Author Maya Cameron-Gordon Visits Kindergarten

Author Maya Cameron-Gordon visited our classrooms in Grades K-3. Maya is an author, a mother, and a former teacher who graduated with an MFA in filmmaking. She read her book “The Mermaid Princesses” to the class and spoke with students about the writing process, highlighting her inspiration in publishing a book that represented characters that her own daughter and other black students could identify with.

Book Synopsis:
A mermaid ignores the sea god's warning and saves the daughter of a ship's captain from the stormy ocean. When the captain needs her help again, the mermaid has to choose between the ocean's rules or rescuing her friends from pirates and a giant.

About the Library Visiting Author Program

Every year, Lisa Levin invites authors to visit the school to talk about their books, storytelling, and the writing process. These author visits are thoughtfully curated to correspond with themes that connect with the curriculum and relate to students’ interests. Hearing the authors speak about their lives and careers makes writing a more tangible life path for students and provides inspiration to read the books the authors talk about.
