5th Grade Song-Writing Project in Music Class
Every year in 5th grade music class, students learn how to play the ukulele while singing familiar songs. Students became composers to expand on the "composer of the year" unit. They used songs from a favorite poet and added melodies, chords, and choruses. Jack Prelusky was their inspiration this year. His rhythmic, humorous poems lend themselves perfectly to melodic lines. Using the title and subject of the poem, fifth graders created a catchy chorus to keep the song living in their hearts and minds. The project culminated when students performed their song creations to the community at a Lower School Gather.
