10 Things to Consider When Looking at Schools

2nd Grader in the Classroom at Mount Tamalpais School

BY AMY PEARSON, DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS AND MARKETING

Nearly everything you need to know can be boiled down to these reminders as you embark on your search.

  1. Be willing to investigate a school you never thought you would.

  2. Approach school tours and events with an open heart and mind. Spreadsheets are rarely necessary.

  3. Remember that considering a school is a two-way street; the school wants to get to know you, and you are getting to know the school.

  4. Treat the process like an exploration, not an inquisition.

  5. Be willing to be surprised and discover things you didn’t expect.

  6. Do not assume the school your best friend or your boss's kid goes to is the right school for your family.

  7. Do not assume that a school you fall in love with has it all figured out.

  8. Be honest about where you’re coming from, what makes you feel safe, and what you’re hoping for.

  9. Be honest about your child’s strengths and challenges.

  10. Remember that you’re seeking a school for your child, which may not be the same school you would choose for yourself. This is especially true as your child gets older and their learning style and preferences become clearer.
