Plan for Reopening This Fall

Message from Andrew:

Our current plan is to reopen Mount Tamalpais School with all students on campus for a full week of instruction on our first day of school, September 2. This decision is informed by the analysis and policy of the Marin County Office of Public Health, UCSF, and numerous other scientific sources. With nearly two months until school opens, we will continue to monitor data and evidence and alter our plans as needed to ensure the safety of our students and the professional community. If changing circumstances dictate modification of our plan, we will alert you immediately.

The success of our reopening plans – partially outlined below and published in greater detail in August – will be a community effort. Our safety and reopening of school will be contingent on safe practices at school and, importantly, at home and beyond. We will count on MTS students and families to practice current and future public health recommendations around social distancing and hygiene. To that end, we ask that families not travel to areas of possible exposure for the two weeks before school starts. This is also a good time for students to practice wearing a face covering as this is a current public health requirement and expectation when on campus. In the weeks ahead, we will share further health guidance that may at times be inconvenient, but are required to allow us all to be in school together this September.

Our reopening plans incorporate the central elements that doctors and scientists are recommending including:

  • Smaller cohorts of students with a limited set of teachers with whom they interact
  • Classroom spaces that allow students and faculty to maintain an appropriate distance
  • A schedule and classrooms that afford an abundance of fresh air
  • The requirement that all students and faculty wear face coverings
  • Ample student supplies to minimize materials used by more than one student in a day

I am currently working with a team of administrators and faculty to build a new schedule that accommodates all of these elements. While this will necessitate adjustments to our program, we are excited about the learning opportunities that will be created by repurposing several classrooms, creating new, outdoor learning spaces, and hiring additional staff. We are also working through a number of policies that have to be updated and created for the coming school year. We will share these more detailed plans in early August.

Two areas of our school day have little guidance from public health at this point: transportation and aftercare. As that guidance evolves, we need to understand your family's need for these two services. If transportation and aftercare are essential to your student's ability to attend MTS in the fall, please complete this short survey.

Reopening school is a phenomenally complex challenge, and a large number of questions, of course, remain unanswered at this time. I appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to detail the plans for our safe return to on-campus instruction. I so look forward to seeing your joyful children back on campus come September!
