Yosemite National Park is the site of this year's 8th grade outdoor education trip. Home of the Yosemite Institute, an acclaimed environmental organization that our students will attend, the Park has become an inspiring natural classroom in one of the most dramatic wilderness settings.
Students will travel to Yosemite and begin their week in Tuolumne Meadows. Here, they will settle into a group campground, meet their Yosemite Institute instructors, and complete preparations for their backcountry trip. In smaller teaching groups, they will ascend Lembert Dome for a view of the Sierra crest and far reaches of the Park, and explore some of the sites that comprise this remarkable sub-alpine meadow.
On Tuesday morning, teaching groups will depart on different trailheads for the remainder of the week. Their journeys will take them through the heart of Yosemite's wilderness until Friday, when they will reassemble as a class before heading for home that afternoon.
During the week, students will study a diverse, experiential curriculum of Yosemite's natural and human history, responsible wilderness use, and the challenges facing the Park now and in the future. Lessons begun in the school classroom will continue, as students develop their own conclusions about environmental stewardship and the sustainability of resource use. Students will keep a field journal of their observations and descriptions, and publish a class anthology when they return.
MTS will host a pre-trip parent meeting in late May to provide additional information about program content and equipment requirements.
