HPIM0439.jpgFor their Outdoor Education trip, sixth-grade students visit Point Reyes National Seashore.  After a week-long introduction to the natural and cultural history of the area, the class departs for the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.  Located in the center of the park, one mile from Limantour Beach, this base camp allows students to spend the week in the midst of the park's abundant natural beauty and environmental diversity.  During the week, students visit a reconstructed Miwok village, test the water quality of a local creek, kayak on Drake's Estero, hike from Bear Valley over Mount Wittenberg to Limantour Beach, visit the Point Reyes 92208_43049_0.jpglighthouse, and explore both the Tule Elk Reserve on Tomales Point and the tidepools at Chimney Rock.  Nighttime programs include a visit from Ane Rovetta (Marin's premier Native American storyteller), a investigation of human and deer eye structure, and a skit night, when student groups make up their own Point Reyes-related fables and act them out (complete with at least one musical number).  Students return tired, happy, and with significantly greater knowledge of Point Reyes, their teachers, and their classmates.
