The Art Program at Mount Tamalpais School is aimed to promote children’s growth and development in many facets of art . The program encourages exploration, creativity, and self-expression at the same time that it promotes mastery of basic art skills and concepts. The program integrates both studio art and art art2a.jpgappreciation. The sequence of lessons within each grade level is carefully planned to accommodate the interest spans, skills and abilities of the students, as well as seasonal topics and typical school holidays. Lessons are varied to sustain children’s interest, yet organized so that concepts and skills introduced in one lesson can be reinforced and expanded upon in later lessons. The Art Program is designed around the belief that the experiencing and enjoying of art is more likely to occur when there is structure and sequence. Sequence is related to the organization of activities so that they challenge, develop, and build upon the ideas and skills that students have previously acquired. Within this structure, the teacher also acknowledges the creative process as a journey of unfolding and surprising developments that should be encouraged and exploited. Students are introduced to a wide variety of media.
